What do all the letters mean?
Here is a breakdown and description for each of the credentials behind my name for your reference. All it amounts to is the extensive time and energy that I have invested to provide quality and value to you. The learning does not stop here but here is what I have so far.
MS - MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NUTRITION
Graduate master's degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Full scholarship recipient of the Children's Healthy Living Program for Remote and Underserved Minority Populations of the Pacific Region. The focus of my research was on childhood obesity prevention, specifically in regards to the nutrition environment in Guam. Here I discovered the importance of parent/adult role modeling of health behaviors that impact children's eating styles, habits & lifestyles well into adulthood.
RDN - REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST
This is a nationally recognized professional credential available through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) go through a rigorous certification process comprised of the following: all DPD coursework within a bachelor's or master's degree program; dietetic internship program (1200+ supervised hours of pre-professional experience), and pass the Registration Examination for Dietitians. Upon successful completion of the registration exam, RDNs must uphold a professional code of ethics, as well as maintain a professional development learning plan/evaluation for certification renewal every 5 years.
LD - LICENSED DIETITIAN
Guam Law stipulates that any dietitian or nutritionist be licensed with the Guam Board of Allied Health Examiners (GBAHE) in order to practice/work on the island. This board certification must be renewed every 2 years with all continuing education requirements approved by GBAHE.
MIEP - MINDFUL AND INSTINCTIVE EATING PRACTITIONER
This MIEP certification is a specialty that focuses on mindfulness and the body's natural instincts. This whole body approach seeks to lessen confusion about diet culture and neutralize negative attitudes/feelings about food and weight expectations. It offers a structured counseling strategy that boosts client engagement and participation for improved health outcomes.
